But for professional and business users, the ability to create your own smart documents and edit existing ones is an indispensable feature that can require some out-of-pocket expense. For the rest of us, there's the Acrobat free trial version or an open source Windows program called Sumatra. It supports multiple document formats like XPS (Microsoft's attempt to compete with PDF) and CBZ/CBR (commonly used when displaying digital comic books like those in the image at left). While Sumatra can view documents in any format, it cannot convert from one format to another. It also doesn't read PDF files that feature DRM (digital rights management) protection. This is commonly encountered in commercial ebooks, so if you're looking to read your collection on your computer, you might have to stick with Acrobat or a dedicated ebook reader. Additionally, Sumatra doesn't support PDF forms, which makes it a no-go if you're used to downloading your government tax forms and filling out the PDFs on your computer before sending them to the IRS. For everything else, though, Sumatra is more than up to the task. We're betting that you've used Adobe's iconic at some point in your digital life. The program is a mainstay in the graphic arts world and the amateur photography and hobbyist retouching realms. The only catch is the price tag. While it's well worth the money for pros, there's a great alternative called Pixlr if you don't need all of Photoshop's bells and whistles. One of the best things about Pixlr is its portability. ![]() It's actually an online application, as opposed to software that you need to install on your local computer. All you have to do to access it is point your favorite web browser to the Pixlr home page. You'll see three options that are custom-tailored to your user level and image editing experience. We like to select the advanced option because it opens up a workspace very much like Photoshop. There's a familiar vertical tool palette on the left side, layer and history windows on the right, and the requisite file, image, and filter menus along the top. You can edit images that are already online, upload images from your computer, or create new images just like you can in Photoshop. Pixlr's selection of filters doesn't compare, and because the Flash-based application runs in your browser, it can't handle dozens of simultaneous images and operations like Photoshop can. 360 editor for mac.
